Hardwood Floor Polyurethane Peeling
Dirt or chemicals on top of a floor or embedded in its finish can cause subsequent coats of finish to flake or peel off.
Hardwood floor polyurethane peeling. This is what i did. The manufacturer says it is caused by moisture underneath the planks. In the dining rooms and entry way there are rugs on the hardwood floors with no pads and apparently water must have been spilled in a couple of areas and has seeped through to the floor because the polyurethane is peeling off in long strips. Floor finishes peel because the floor was contaminated or improperly prepped when the finish was applied.
Nobody likes to see polyurethane peel especially just after refinishing the floor. So the idea of refinishing a hardwood floor did not scare me. We recently had our floors screened and recoated throughout the house. I used an oil based stain and followed that with an oil based poly. This laminate floor was purchased from lumber liquidators their good stuuf. I have refinished multiple dressers tables chairs beds etc.
I am supposed to close on a house this week and i have a question regarding the hardwood floors. Less so in the lr dr and foyer but still peeling in. A contaminated floor won t hold finish. For example it s not uncommon for old floors to start peeling as the old polyurethane topcoat starts to deteriorate. They were recoated with high gloss oil base polyurethane 2 coats. I am having issues with polyurethane peeling off my hardwood floors. It doesn t seem to make sense.
We are now experiencing the same problem of top finish peeling. Sometimes the coats will lay down flat and smooth and look good after the floor finisher has left only to receive a call later that the finish is separating from the floor.
